Hospital

 For the second half of my clinical experience I had the opportunity to work in a hospital. This was extremely interesting as I saw similarities and differences between the healthcare system I am accustom to in the U.S. The largest difference being the way in which the hospital still utilizes paper charting and typewriters rather than having an EMR. The hospital also performs bedside rounds with much larger numbers (10-20) different doctors, residents, and medical students in front of the patient which is a fairly uncommon practice in my experience in the United States.

Feria de Salud

 On my last day in the clinic they were having a health fair. Here they offered a health screening as well as various booths to discus nutrition, exercise, sexual health, womens health, and dental health. This was a really great opportunity and I was able to get to know women from and learn about an organization in the city that has a lot of similarities to my nonprofit organization Female Partnered Health.

La Clinica

 I have had the opportunity to work with doctors and nutritionists in a clinic setting in Oaxaca. This is similar to our primary care/family medicine offices in the United States. I noticed that similar to my osteopathic education there is a strong emphasis and focus on mind, body, and soul and taking a more holistic approach to medicine.

Halfway

 I have reached the halfway point in my rotation in Oaxaca. I have already seen a massive improvement in my Spanish and have had many fulfilling experiences with residents of Oaxaca. These experiences have helped me gain a greater understanding of the culture and how culture impacts community health.

NGO

 I have had the opportunity to work in an N.G.O here in Oaxaca, called Centro de Esperanza Infantil. This has been such an incredible opportunity. I have been able to meet and teach young students. These students have shared with me their experience living in Oaxaca, as well as have shared a little about the culture of Oaxaca especially amongst the youth.

First week

During my first week I already feel as though I have made major strides in my Spanish. I have also had the opportunity to try many authentic dishes, learn how to salsa, and learn about the culture and history of Oaxaca. I have enjoyed getting to know people from the community and especially the opportunity I have been given to work with and get to know children from the children's center.

First Impressions

 My first impressions of Oaxaca: It is a beautiful place full of rich history, culture, and craftsmanship. I enjoy looking at the incredible mountains from my rooftop, going for walks throughout the city and tasting the different unique dishes from the area.
